Mr Andrew is better known passionately as ‘Andrew Master' to his beloved students who are still very fond of him and are scattered all around the world in all walks of life.
Mr Andrew was born on the 22nd February 1926 in Jaffna. He joined St Patrick's College Jaffna as a student in 1938 and later as a teacher in the year 1949. He was mainly teaching Botany for ‘A' level and Biology and Chemistry for ‘O' level students. His teaching profession at the College lasted for 18 years until he migrated to Nigeria in the year January 1967. He carried on his noble profession in Nigeria for 23 years as a Head of Science Department in Notre Dame Girls Secondary School, Tit Combe College and Mount Saint Gabriel's Secondary School.
Mr Andrew retired and migrated to the United Kingdom in the year of 1990, and has been instrumental in forming the London St Patrick's College Jaffna Alumni Association in the year 1991.
Needless to say, that his love towards his Alma Mater has been one of the main strengths of our Association over the past 14 years. The U.K. Alumni today is being looked-upon by Patricians around the world as a shining example of the Patrician unity and strength. His dedication is enviable and we are very fortunate to have him serve in our Alumni as a founder member, President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary and Editor over the last 10 years.
Mr Andrew was elected President of the U.K. Alumni on the 7th June 1992 and served till the 9th December 1995. He strictly adhered to the provisions in the constitution. During his term as the President the strength of the membership doubled from 65 to 130. He also established contacts with other St Patrick's Old Boys Associations in Jaffna, Colombo, France and Sydney. He was famous for scrupulously avoiding nepotism, parochialism and favouritism within the ranks of the Association and always gave first preference to the needs of the College in taking any decision.
I was fortunate to have served with him as the Chairman of the Publication Sub-committee where I gained valuable experience in publishing our annual souvenirs. He would always give due consideration to the views of the writer and the sub-committee and has helped us maintain a very high standard. -
