In a letter received by town council from Vince Anderson, CAO of the City of Winkler, he stated they were giving Altona support."I am pleased to report this request has received unanimous support from two Council Committees (Police committee and Fire Committee) and then by Council as a whole," he wrote.Despite already having a similar agreement with Morden the City of Winkler asked that Altona also be ready to accept residents of Winkler into their community, in an event of their evacuation."As we are so close together (Morden and Winkler), we may both be "hit" at the same time so it makes good sense to have more than one option," Anderson wrote.

Vince Anderson (who is also Winkler's Emergency Coordinator) said some communities have already had verbal understandings previous to this.No one is expecting any kind of emergency that drastic, and even in the event of one, Anderson doubts there would be 8,000 people looking for refuge in Altona."Some people would have family in different towns," he stated."But you have to plan for that event."'As far as Winkler's readiness, Anderson said there isn't a set number of people the city could take in."You do what you have to do," Anderson said.
