While receiving near real-time meter readings is an important benefit of the AMR system, it's not the only one.The operating system can also detect meter tampering, power theft and an outages based on how the meter responds.

Anderson says, "Once we install all of the new meters and the project is completed, the outage assessment software component will help us locate outages and determine their size.
