Toby Anderson—profile of new partner in Freehills' Projects group
...
Toby Anderson's early legal experience set him up with the full complement of skills necessary to establish his career in the projects field.
Starting out at New Zealand firm Bell Gully involved in a mix of environment work, litigation, and front-end construction, Toby then moved to London-based Fenwick Elliott, a niche construction firm, where his work took a greater focus on the construction aspect of projects.
‘The UK is a big market for construction legal services. While there I was seconded to Kuala Lumpur and worked on the new Kuala Lumpur airport project including involvement in dispute issues,' he says.
From his stint in London and Asia, Toby settled into Sydney—‘it was the right balance between proximity to family in New Zealand and exposure to large-scale infrastructure projects'—joining Freehills in 2000.
Toby's specific area of expertise within the projects industry is procurement and construction—from a straightforward procurement arrangement through to a complex public private partnership arrangement involving project financing. He believes that a good projects lawyer must have the willingness to build a diverse range of skills across different areas of projects, and view themself as a lawyer with skills not only relating to construction but the many ways a project can be structured, financed and delivered.
‘Clients are seeking legal advisers who can advise across the many legal aspects relating to the delivery of infrastructure, so this is an important aspect of being a project lawyer,' he says.
Successfully bringing to close large infrastructure projects for clients and mentoring junior solicitors has been a rewarding element of Toby's career to date.
‘I feel honoured to be invited to the partnership.I was initially quite elated and feel a huge sense of achievement,' he says.
During his time with Freehills, Toby has benefited from mentoring and coaching by key partners in the Projects group, which he says has helped the transition through to partnership and provided him with a sense of purpose.Looking forward, Toby sees his promotion as having a significant impact on his practice, giving him a heightened awareness of staff resources and retention issues and the many business aspects associated with Freehills.
‘I'm looking forward to feeling more integrated into the Freehills business as well as to the challenge of taking on an increased role in fostering solicitors as they progress their career,' he says.
His advice to other lawyers aspiring to partnership is to have ‘open discussions with your supervising partner about career expectations and what you want to achieve at Freehills'.
‘Freehills is a very open place and fosters those discussions. The firm also encourages you to set goals and once set, it does everything to encourage you to meet them,' he adds.
Balance is also important to Toby in his leisure time and while travel and golf used to occupy his time, these days his weekends consist of ‘going to playgrounds, swimming lessons and going to child-friendly cafes'.
