   The luncheon speaker was Toben Anderson, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in October 1994. Through faith and determination, she conquered a disease that threatens one in eight women. In 1997, Toben conquered her second major challenge , climbing to the summit of Antarctica's 16,067 foot Vinson Massif.
   
   Toben Anderson has received extensive media coverage for her story and heroic undertakings. The 5th Estate produced a documentary and she has appeared on Pamela Wallin Live, Global News, CTV News and the Life Network, and she recently finished filming a documentary for CFCN. Toben has been named the National Spokesperson for both the Canadian Breast Cancer Society and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. In 1999, she was awarded the YMCA Women of Distinction Award.

   ARIUS is also pleased to present a guest speaker, Toben Anderson, who will speak to attendees about her experiences as a breast cancer survivor who defied expectations to climb the highest peak in Antarctica.
   
   When Toben Anderson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1994, she found herself facing a challenge that threatened her life. She beat the odds and conquered the disease by summoning her will to live, accepting responsibility and focusing on the quality of her journey. Cheating death became a metaphor for getting the most out of life and achieving goals that had previously seemed impossible. To raise awareness for cancer research, she took on the challenge of climbing to the top of the bottom of the world. On January 22, 1997, having had no previous experience as a climber, she reached the summit of Mount Vinson Massif. An inspiring and articulate speaker, Toben Anderson will share her story and show that with courage, determination and faith, anything-and everything-is possible. Toben Anderson has recently been named National Spokesperson for both the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

   In 1994, Toben faced a crisis that threatened her very life - a crisis in the form of cancer. By accepting responsibility, finding the courage to initiate change, and focusing on the quality of the journey, Toben beat the odds and conquered a disease that threatens each of us. To Toben, cheating death became the metaphor for getting the most out of life and the end result set her on a journey not even she imagined might be possible. To raise support for cancer research and to inspire others to boldly chase their dreams, Toben took on a symbolic challenge and successfully summitted Vinson Massif, Antarctica's highest mountain on January 22, 1997. Since then she has touched the hearts of thousands of Canadians with her poignant story of dedication, commitment and triumphant belief. Her victory on the mountain, combined with her triumph over cancer, immediately catapulted her into the public eye, resulting in a featured documentary on CBC's The Fifth Estate and a guest appearance on Pamela Wallin Live, as well as extensive national print, radio and television media.
   
   It is a fact of life that we are all, whether as individuals or as organizations, consistently challenged by obstacles and confronted by crises. How we perceive and deal with such roadblocks defines the true essence of who and what we are.. and what we will become. While we may not know what form such obstacles or crises will take or whether they will be casual or catastrophic, we alone have the responsibility to choose how to deal with them. Every crisis we face can be seen in two ways - as a tragedy or an opportunity. By focusing on the opportunities and facing our fears, we gain experience, strength and confidence. The degree of our success is directly related to the attitudes we adopt and the course of action we choose to take.

   Because of the overwhelming success of The Climb for the CURE, Toben committed to expanding her vision. But during the final planning stages of the first Defying ExpectationsTm Expedition her cancer came back to challenge her yet again. After undergoing four months of aggressive chemotherapy followed by a stem cell transplant Toben has once more found triumph in the face of overwhelming adversity. She has recently been named National Spokesperson for both the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation and with their support will continue with her mission to teach that with courage, determination and faith, anything is possible.
   
   Toben describes her personal story and shows how everyone can learn to survive and thrive, in spite of the curves that life throws at us. Whether trying to succeed in a rapidly changing market, striving to meet sales or productivity objectives or creating balance within our lives, the tools and methods are identical.
