Suzanne Anderson bestows the gift of music on children
    ...
Suzanne Anderson, a full-time volunteer, accepted the PFMC "Keystone Salute" in April in King of Prussia.

"Everyone really kept it a secret from me, but I was so honored," Anderson gushed.

The salute recognizes people who have contributed to the fostering of music.

After retiring from her job at the Metropolitan Edison Company, where she worked for 36 years, Anderson has continued her dedication to volunteering.

"It's been too much fun," said Anderson, 69.
    ...
It's a gift," Anderson said, full of excitement and love for the art. "These children never lose it. Music continues to be a part of their lives."

Dedicated to finding and fostering young musical talent, the NFMC conducts annual Junior Festivals with more than 117,000 participants.

Anderson has worked with the NFMC junior festival at ESU for several years.

"It's rewarding to see, for example, a 4-year-old violinist develop from 'Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star' to a concerto by their teens or college years," she said.

Within the Music Study Club of Stroudsburg, Anderson has held numerous positions including executive board, vice president, budget committee, club yearbook and programs and ambassador to the school with scholarship information.
    ...
Anderson was involved in the Monroe County Cooperative Extension for 35 years as vice-president and treasurer of the 4-H Electricity Club.

"I really admired what the 4-H educational experience is built on, which is the premise of learning by doing," Anderson said of her involvement in the club.

Anderson said she is grateful to the 4-H experience for helping her overcome her fear of speaking in front of large groups.

"Even as a leader I was learning by doing," Anderson said through chuckles, reminiscing of her days in 4-H. "I learned to get up and do presentations."

"Here I was, a 26-year-old woman, and I was afraid to talk in front of a group of children," Anderson laughed.

Anderson earned a bachelor of arts degree in philosophy and English, graduating cum laude from East Stroudsburg University. She was inducted into the Sigma-Tau Delta National English Honor Society.

In addition to being involved with Pocono Lively Arts, she is chair of Youth and Music awards for the Monroe County Arts Council, as well as, a board member for the Pocono Youth Orchestra.

The Pocono Youth Orchestra presented its spring concert in Cecilia S. Cohen Recital Hall at the Fine and Performing Arts Center of East Stroudsburg University last weekend.

"I want to continue just what I'm doing, which is working with all of these organizations," Anderson said. "For the future, I would like to see these scholarships endowed and self-sufficient."

Money from the concert is used for scholarships: $500 to a senior high school student who is majoring in music; $150 to a young student to attend a summer music camp.

"These summer music camps are very helpful for students to decide if they want to continue with music," Anderson said.
