A Lymo staff member in charge of tallying passenger counts had been forgetting to add riders who used transfers, student passes and senior citizen cards, according to Stephen Anderson, the agency's assistant general manager.
That mistake, which occurred from October through January, caused Lymo to register 32,033 fewer bus passengers than the agency actually carried during the first six months of this fiscal year, which started July 1.
Anderson said Lymo conducted a passenger audit this month because ridership totals weren't consistent with fare collections.
"It didn't make sense," he said.
Prior to the audit, Lymo reported that bus ridership was down 32.4 percent for this fiscal year compared with last year. That is more than double the 13.6 percent decline in passenger fares. Anderson said the actual decline in passengers is 21.5 percent. -
