Those fans who travelled to Cardiff last week would have been depressed enough by the final score without finding some unwelcome news in the match programme that could only add to their misery.In the long list of coaches, Steve Anderson is given credit, if that's the appropriate word, for marshalling Scotland's defensive efforts last weekend.

Having launched the biggest charm offensive since Mata Hari last fluttered her eyelashes, this bizarre appointment undoes all of Matt Williams' good work in one blundering move; never mind shooting yourself in the foot, Williams has sawn his off with a rusty penknife.Scottish rugby has already seen Anderson's work up close, and it isn't a pretty sight.

Before making the move as assistant coach to Kiwi Searanke at Glasgow in the autumn of 2002, Anderson had coached the Warrington Wolves and the local Warrington Guardian concluded his reign there thus: "Worst Coach in 123-Year History".This is unlikely to have made it on to his CV, which nevertheless listed time spent with London Irish to unlock a few union doors, although this amounted to no more than two days in two consecutive seasons, as this paper has already revealed.

Now, everyone expects a resume to accentuate the positive, but everyone also expects employers like the SRU to carry out some due diligence before they hire someone like Anderson.

This is the same Steve Anderson who enjoyed such success at Glasgow in the 2002/2003 season that he lasted little more than six months, even shorter than Searanke.This is the same Steve Anderson whose bully-boy methods were more suited to a juvenile boot camp than a professional sports team and resulted in murmurings of both a players' revolt and a lawsuit.
