To Stephen Anderson, a door should be a piece of art.

Anderson, owner of Artisans Doors of Montana, has begun a program that enlists 10 artists from around Montana to help create custom, one-of-a-kind pieces of art - or doors.

"A door is not just a door anymore," says Anderson.
    ...
"People get very excited, but also very anxious," Anderson said, "because this is often the first piece of artwork they've commissioned."
    ...
When Anderson first bought Artisans about 18 months ago, he thought the best way to get to the top was to invest in the latest, greatest equipment.

That's since changed. He's come to the conclusion that most any business can buy equipment and make a good product.

He realized that his best assets are his people.

"I stepped back and decided to focus on building talents of our crafts people," he said.

Building a business that can reliably serve its customers around the world means creating a work force that is readily available. That's why Anderson has initiated an apprentice program.

Artisans recently received a loan from the Montana Department of Commerce to help develop a work-force training program. Starting next month, apprentices will begin learning how to create a door, from design consultation to the finished product.

"We'll invest in them over time to become full-fledged craftsmen," Anderson said. "We're helping people build talents that they can take with them. (Businesses) haven't done a lot of that in this part of the United States."

He said he thinks other local businesses should do the same.

"We need to create a skill set and talent to build a product or service that is sold outside of our little market," Anderson said.

That's not just part of doing business. For Anderson, the apprentice program is part of giving back to the community. He has a saying that he likes to grow his business three people at at time. Since buying the business in 2002, he has more than doubled its work force, to 24 people.

Anderson is building Artisans on an import and export model. He's bringing in exotic woods from China - such as magnolia, redwood, fir and oak. All of which have been grown or harvested in environmentally friendly ways, he says. Artisans adds value to the wood by customizing the doors, and then exporting them around the world. Of course Anderson also uses native Montana woods, but the idea is still to add value and then sell them locally or outside the confining economic walls of the Flathead Valley.
