Merrill Lynch alone will need 1,000, according to Sharon Anderson, assistant vice president of Merrill Lynch who is responsible for staffing the financial firm's new headquarters slated to open in about a year.

The bad news, according to Greuling, Anderson and William Charland, a writer and employment and training expert, is no one knows where these employees are coming from.

Anderson, who heads the Merrill Lynch human resources effort out of Lakewood, said one way to attract competent people is to create partnerships and alliances with institutions of learning and the government.

"The skills we need have changed immensely," she said, adding that the ideal employee should be a communicator, be good at interpersonal relationships, have integrity, be a problem-solver, be enterprising, display leadership and management acumen.

"We need the complete package at a salary we can afford," she said.

Anderson said advertising still is a major way of seeking employees but added job fairs, using more part-timers, temporary workers, contract employees and consultants are becoming more accepted to augment a working staff.
