The conference, Iron & Steel Scrap and Scrap Alternatives, was opened by Gorham president M Concannon and Sarah Hornby Anderson, formerly of Midrex and now president of the consultancy firm, Global Strategic Solutions.
    ...
S Hornby Anderson followed up with a detailed metallics demand and supply forecast. Upon discussing a multitude of topics ranging from global steel production and demand to metallics trade, sources, processes and price movements she combined much of this information in a comprehensive table entitled 'World and NAFTA EAF Metallics balance for 2000, 2005 and 2010'. Unfortunately, her steel production forecast, on which the metallics estimates were based, was well out of date. For instance, her 2010 forecast for global steel output was already exceeded in 2002. The table also shows the EAF share of total steel output to keep rising throughout the period, which is doubtful as the share from BOF production has risen 2% since 1995. Furthermore, contrary to the title given to the table, the metallics balance shown did not pertain to NAFTA but only to the USA and Canada. However, these flaws were largely offset by the prodigious amount of highly relevant information that she cited.

The last speaker in this session, R Ridder, managing director of BSW Rohstoffhandel, was critical of the absence of precise, internationally compatible rules regarding standardisation of unalloyed scrap grades. This made it difficult for buyers to put the concept of total quality management into practice. Noting that it was strong demand pressure from Asia and at times from Turkey that had driven up the price of scrap, he concluded that most scrap prices are no longer determined regionally but globally.
