Anderson is enjoying experience at UMC

    ...
Ryan Anderson, head coach of the UMC fastpitch softball team, isn't the only new members of the team.

"We're a very young team," Anderson said."We only had two returners (Kerry Stinar and Jean Korkowski). We have two seniors - one returner (Stinar) and the other (Amy Ross) is a first-year player."

Anderson, whose assistant coach is head women's soccer coach Chris Przemieniecki, started last October.
    ...
"We had a young, small team then," Anderson said."We added a few players and a couple people had to quit."

Twelve players are on the current roster.Anderson would like to boost that number to 15.

While the 3-9 Eagles don't have a lot of wins on the year, they're in a lot of the games they play, Anderson said, but have been hurting themselves with mental mistakes. He saw significant improvement in that area Tuesday in the home opener.

Anderson, originally from Colby, Kansas, came to UMC from Nebraska-Kearney, where he was an assistant coach. He says his experience here has been positive.

"I've really enjoyed it up here," he said, adding that his players are determined to improve."Kids are staying after practice to work out.I don't have to ask them to stay."

"We really fought hard in this game," UMC head coach Ryan Anderson said of the Eagles' win over Dordt."We were down early, still down after three innings. We didn't score until the fourth inning. We made it happen when we had to."

    ...
"They got hot hitting the bat," Anderson said."They just kept hitting. We kept trying to battle to get back, but they'd score a couple runs, we'd score one, they'd score a couple runs, we'd score one. They were just hitting better than we were and we just couldn't keep up."

UMC has a very young team this year, he noted."We're staying in the game, but our mental mistakes are allowing the other team to stay in the game."
