   Robin Anderson is a training analyst in adult, child and adolescent analysis with the British Psychoanalytical Society where he was head of the training in child and adolescent analysis. He has been a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist since 1978. In 1991 he was appointed consultant psychiatrist at the Tavistock Clinic where he was head of the Adolescent Department from 1991 to 2000. He retired from this post in 2003 but still continues to teach both trainees and staff there. He now concentrates on his private psychoanalytic practice including supervision.

   DR. ROBIN ANDERSON is one of the leading contemporary Kleinians to grapple with profoundly difficult aspects of adolescent treatment. He has written about adolescent suicide and its relation to psychotic parts of the self which can emerge under the strains of adolescence. He describes the body in adolescence as the container of a whole history of object relationships, which can eventuate in disturbing bodily symptomatology , eating disorders, cutting, substance abuse and suicidal behavior. He has a special sensitivity for these self-harming adolescents as well as for the mental health professionals who struggle to treat them.
   
   Dr. Anderson is a Training Analyst in Adult, Child and Adolescent Analysis at the Institute of Psychoanalysis in London, where he has also been Director of the Child and Adolescent Training in Psychoanalysis. He was head of the Clinical Services of Adolescents at the Tavistock Clinic from 2000 to 2003 and had been chairman of the Adolescent Department and a Consultant Psychiatrist there from 1991 to 2000. He continues to teach trainees and staff at the Tavistock, as well as working in private psychoanalytic practice.
   
   Dr. Anderson has published numerous papers and book chapters on child, adolescent and adult psychoanalysis and psychotherapy and has edited two books: Facing It Out: Clinical Perspectives on Adolescent Disturbances with Anna Dartington, and Clinical Lectures on Klein and Bion.

   We will begin the day by hearing Dr. Anderson present a paper entitled "A psychoanalytic approach to adolescent suicide." The paper examines the urge to self-destructive action in many adolescents as expressing something concretely that cannot be thought. Dr. Anderson will then be interviewed by Dr. Terrence Owens in order to explore, among other topics, Dr. Anderson's ideas regarding the denial of appetite, deliberate self-harm (including cutting), drug abuse, and other forms of self-destructive behavior.
