Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada from July, 1989 to November, 1995, Reid Anderson has had a long and distinguished career in the world of dance as a dancer, teacher, coach, producer and artistic director.Mr. Anderson is currently the Artistic Director of the Stuttgart Ballet.
Born in New Westminster, British Columbia, Mr. Anderson began his dance training at the Dolores Kirkwood Academy in Burnaby, B.C. At the age of 17 he received a full scholarship to study at The Royal Ballet School in London, England.One year later he joined Germany's Stuttgart Ballet, where choreographer John Cranko was then artistic director.
Dancing in a wide range of classical and contemporary works Mr. Anderson's repertoire with the Stuttgart Ballet included many Cranko works such as Carmen, Onegin, Swan Lake, Initials R.B.M.E., Romeo and Juliet and The Taming of the Shrew.
Renowned for his strong characterization, elegance and particularly his partnering skills, Mr. Anderson danced with many of the world's leading ballerinas including Marcia Haydée, Karen Kain and Natalia Makarova.

Throughout his career Mr. Anderson worked with some of this century's leading choreographers such as Sir Kenneth MacMillan, John Neumeier, Glen Tetley, Jiri Kylian and William Forsythe.

In 1984, Mr. Anderson staged and produced The National Ballet of Canada's production of Onegin, which premiered at the Toronto International Festival.Mr. Anderson, in the lead role, partnered Karen Kain as Tatiana.

As Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, Mr. Anderson, working with Associate Director Valerie Wilder, planned seven seasons that showed the range and diversity of both the dancers and the company's repertoire.

For the 1992/93 season, Mr. Anderson invited John Neumeier, Artistic Director of the Hamburg Ballet, to create an original ballet, Now and Then, for the company.

Mr. Kudelka choreographed The Miraculous Mandarin (1993) which also marked Mr. Anderson's return to the stage in the role of the Father.

Mr. Anderson also appointed John Alleyne as Resident Choreographer in 1990, who later created Time Out With Lola (1991) and Interrogating Slam (1991).

In February 1992, Mr. Anderson staged and produced for the National Ballet John Cranko's The Taming of the Shrew.

Mr. Anderson, for the 1994/95 season, acquired several prized new acquisitions for the company.

For the 1995/96 season, Mr. Anderson commissioned James Kudelka to choreograph a brand new production of The Nutcracker, the result was a tremendous success with both critics and audiences alike.

Also in 1995/96 Mr. Anderson acquired Paul Taylor's Company B, George Balanchine's Tchaikowsky Pas de Deux, Frederick Ashton's Symphonic Variations and Kenneth MacMillan's masterpiece Manon.

In 1991, Mr. Anderson was invited to stage The Taming of the Shrew for the Deutsche Staatsoper in Berlin, Romeo and Juliet for the Australian Ballet and Brouillards for Ballet British Columbia.In 1992, Mr. Anderson restaged The Taming of the Shrew for the Australian Ballet and in 1993 he produced Onegin for the La Scala Opera Ballet in Milan, Italy.Mr. Anderson also travelled to Buenos Aires, Argentina to stage The Taming of the Shrew for Teatro de Colon returning in 1994 to coach and produce Onegin.Also in 1994 Mr. Anderson produced and staged Onegin for the Boston Ballet.In 1995, he returned to Boston to stage The Taming of the Shrew and also to Berlin to stage Onegin for the Berlin Opera Ballet.In 1996, Mr. Anderson travelled to Rome to stage Onegin for the Rome Opera Ballet and to Helsinki to stage Romeo and Juliet for the Norwegian National Ballet and to Melbourne to stage Onegin for the Australian Ballet.
