In reply to Council , Mr. Ray Anderson , Vice President , Waste Management , elaborated on fees and mentioned there will be additional costs due to Spadra landfill closing. He further stated that green waste is picked up in a specialized fully automated truck and then taken to facilities for processing. He said composting can be considered and kits and containers can be available to residents.
Council discussed ABA 939 compliance , significant fines for non-compliance , closing of landfills , communicating with citizens , and requested costs regarding composting. Council would like to schedule a study session with Mr. Anderson to discuss additional options.
Mr. Anderson reviewed the audit and said it was an excellent opportunity to work with the State. He reported that 13 , 000 notices are being sent out to businesses to encourage recycling and reusing to get better diversion. He said a former City Manager , Ralph Nunez , now on the Baldwin Park School Board , will work with him to provide programs at the Junior High School level and then the high school. He is working with Raging Waters for additional diversion. He is also working with Cindy Hastings , General Manager of Lone Hill Manor , to deliver 18 gallon containers for residents to participate in the white paper program.
He reported that the Spadra landfill is closing and while Sanitation District Puente Hills is taking 500 tons per day , they close at noon. Republic Waste has diverted waste to Chiquita Canyon and if the decision is made to go to Puente Hills , Puente Hills would go back to shutting down early due to pollution. The farther out we have to go , the more expensive it is. He looks forward to working with the City and appreciates any help.
In response to Mr. Stevens , Mr. Anderson said he was talking about education regarding a commercial study on school site. Council requested item be agendized.
