...
Americans are rolling up their sleeves , taking action to protect their health and environment and improve the quality of their lives , said Administrator Browner , who serves with Anderson as co-chair of the Meeting. The National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America will focus on solutions being generated in our backyards and in America's businesses - solutions that protect public health and the environment while growing the economy. It will place a spotlight on the best ideas in America , and give others a chance to learn about them and use them in their own hometowns..
America's great challenge for the 21st century will be expanding our prosperity to include all people , and developing the innovations that will guarantee a healthy economy , said Anderson.Just as the Volunteer Summit of 1997 committed Americans to action on volunteerism , the National Town Meeting for a Sustainable America will focus the country on sustainable development : a way to help the country grow while enhancing community life , the economy , the environment and other values we share..
The National Town Meeting is co-sponsored by the President's Council on Sustainable Development ( PCSD ) and the non-profit Global Environment & Technology Foundation ( GETF ).The City of Detroit , Wayne County , the State of Michigan , General Motors Corporation , and the Metropolitan Organizing Strategy Enabling Strength ( MOSES ) will host the event.
At today's press conferences in Washington and New York , government , business and non-profit leaders named the first building blocks for the campaign and gave examples of success stories that could be replicated by others. ( Separate handout attached with details on building blocks and success stories. ).
