This personal trainer comes with his own facility. He also comes with his own well-formed approach to training, which amounts to something like this: Train like the pros. By which Peter Anderson means, focus on strength and conditioning. He's a coach by trade--an "exercise physiologist," he calls it, with a master's degree in human performance from SCSU and a bachelor's in exercise science from UMass, Amherst. In describing his program, Anderson suggests that you imagine a collegiate weight room filled with a variety of athletes. "I take what you do there and put it in the private sector," he says.

Clients come in for hour or half-hour sessions, which include sports-specific training and lifestyle-specific training. He's not technologically obsessed--in act, in addition to the Nautilus machines and stationary bikes, he advocates "multi-directional, ground-based training, real conditioning, the way you did it when you were a kid."

Anderson and his two full-time and two part-time staff of personal trainers work by appointment only in the 5,000 square-foot training facility that is not a gym--you won't be competing with casual members for workout space.

But the coach in Anderson comes out when asked about the best advice he's ever heard. He instantly recites an old proverb: Every day on the plains of the Serengeti, a gazelle gets up running.
