   `` You can imagine how significant this is for them , '' said Nancy Anderson , vice president of communications for Easter Seals. `` It allows them to be independent at. It's truly miraculous.''.
   
   The technology available today helps people not only at , but on the job
   
   `` We hear from our clients that there is absolutely no form of independence greater than a paycheck , so assistive technology that allows them to be hired for and work at competitive jobs is actually wonderful. It's a significant breakthrough , '' Anderson said.
   
   The goal of the Museum of Science event was to make people aware that there's help available for those with disabilities who want to become more independent at or on the job.
   
   Telling the world about the newfangled helpers is important , Anderson said , as word doesn't always get out that such things are available.
   
   `` This is a whole area that people are not terribly aware of. Businesses are not really aware that people who are blind or that can't use their hands can be terrific employees. There are software and other devices that allow them to use a computer like a whiz , '' she said.
   
   The theme of this year's Easter Seals Assistive Technology Day was environmental control. New technology has delivered ways for people with severe disabilities to do some simple but important things around the house they would never otherwise be able to do.
