Michael Anderson
...
Michael Anderson, owner of American Eagle Home Inspections, is used to seeing houses. New and old houses, grand and modest ones. But a recent trip to Florida required Anderson's skills for a different kind of house. The kind that is no longer standing.
Anderson is registered as an inspector for the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and traveled to Florida for seven weeks to help inspect homes damaged during the recent hurricanes. The situation, he said, is far more serious that it appears on TV.
"The fiscal damage is one thing," Anderson said. "But the mental devastation is another."
FEMA inspectors report the amount of damage to homes and businesses, these reports then influence the amount of government aid the building owners can receive, he said. Oftentimes, his inspections were painfully quick.
"Imagine a beautiful condo overlooking the Atlantic, and now imagine that there is nothing left but the frame," he said. "It took me half an hour just to calm the people before I could talk to them."
Anderson said he is no stranger to Florida, or the city of Four Piers, where he did many of his inspections. He and his wife Sarah, a aquatic science teacher at Boerne High School, take a group of students to the area every year to study marine life.

Another type of inspection requires Anderson to visit a site as the home is being built to check the foundation, plumbing, electric and other elements as they are added.
"It's a good business to be in," he said. "I have flexibility and I get to be my own boss."
Beyond the benefits of self-management, Anderson said, he loves to build and inspect the building process. Before working as an inspector, he worked for several years in the building business, mostly in management.
Neighbor Terry Slezak said Anderson often puts his skills to work for the benefit of the community. Anderson is often involved in neighborhood activities, from helping with cookouts to repairing flood damage.

"Mike has always helped when needed and chimed in on our property owners' association issues in many constructive ways," she said. "He also was my primary resource for technical and logistical questions when I built my own home."
Anderson said his work is his hobby, but in his free time he also manages three dogs and six cats. -
