Tribute to Michael W. Anderson, A Better Chance Officer
LOS ANGELES, (February 13, 2002) - A Better Chance, the national resource for identifying, recruiting and developing leaders among academically gifted students of color has scheduled a tribute to Michael W. Anderson, A Better Chance senior program officer for Southern California, on February 24, at the J. Paul Getty Center. An award for outstanding lifetime achievement will be presented to Anderson by A Better Chance Executive Director Darnita Killion.

Since 1973, Anderson has helped coordinate A Better Chance's recruitment efforts with more than 300 Southern California public schools. He oversees A Better Chance student and parent support activities and regularly visits A Better Chance Scholars who attend 39 Southern California member schools that include The Cate School, The Thacher School, Midland School, Dunn School, Webb School and Harvard-Westlake School. He is also responsible for visiting member schools and recruiting students throughout the Southwestern United States. For the last decade, Anderson has worked on the campus of the University of Southern California, which has donated facilities and support services.
A native New Yorker, Anderson served in the U.S. Army and graduated from California State University, Los Angeles with a degree in business administration. In addition to his A Better Chance experience, Anderson served as public affairs manager for the California Fair Plan Association, executive director of Crenshaw YMCA of Metropolitan Los Angeles and director of the YMCA Youthmobile Project at the 28TH Street YMCA in Los Angeles. An award-winning public speaker, Anderson served as president of the Los Angeles chapter of Toastmasters International and is an active member of several community-based organizations including NACCP, Urban League and the Girl Scouts Council.
