MICHAEL ANDERSON:
TEACHING AND COUNSELING
SPOKANE, WASH. · Cheney High School physics instructor Jeff Butler knows that this morning, his students will expect more from him.
He will be both teacher and counselor.
Inside his empty classroom Sunday, he sat at his desk preparing to answer questions about what caused space shuttle Columbia to explode in the air. It will be easy to hypothesize about temperature sensors and tile insulation, he said.
But it will be tougher discussing with his 12th-graders the death of their role model, astronaut Michael Anderson, who graduated from Cheney High in 1977.
"How does one prepare to talk about such things?" Butler said. "My students looked up to Michael Anderson. Some of them want to become astronauts because of him. It's a scary time for them."
Anderson, 43, a former physics student at the school, once took a felt banner to a mission in space that read: "Cheney Blackhawks" with the school colors, red and black. In 1998, he brought the banner back to his alma mater. It was framed and hangs at the school entrance along with photographs of Anderson talking to students.
About 25 miles away, in the Spokane Valley, hundreds of worshippers packed Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church for a service dedicated to Anderson. City leaders arrived to pay their respects.

Many at the Sunday services offered testimonials and told fond stories told about Husband and Anderson.
