Micah Anderson, market development coordinator with the Oklahoma State Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry, said the state will offer assistance to some farmers who want to get started with plasticulture.
"Their earnings have to have been no more than $100,000 each of the previous two years, and they have to have received little or no government assistance," he said.
For those who qualify, Anderson said, the state brings in a tractor with a plasticulture machine attached. It creates a bed of soil about a foot high, lays down the plastic strip, and adds a soil layer on each side to anchor the strip. It can also insert the drip tape, which comes in 6,000-foot rolls. After that, it's up to the farmer.
"We set the garden up," Anderson said. "They have to plant it."
Tomatoes, watermelons, squash, okra and other above-ground produce do best in a plasticulture field.
"We've had some people getting good results with potatoes because it keeps the ground loose," Anderson said.
