Matt Anderson, curator of collections at the Fort Miami Heritage Society, authored the St. Joseph article. "This was a great opportunity for us," Anderson said. "Our archives contain a wealth of historic photographs and information, and the Michigan History story allows us to share some of those materials with a wide audience."

The Fort Miami Heritage Society was formed by a group of local citizens in November 1964 and has been dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the Twin Cities area since then. "Clearly the Michigan History piece fits well with our mission," Anderson said.

The article, written by Fort Miami Curator Matthew Anderson, summarizes the vivid history of Native and French relations in the Great Lakes region, and includes dramatic photographs of some of the exhibit's artifacts.

"Once we had the photos, captions were written for the featured objects," notes Anderson, "and then an overall story on the central role Michigan played in the early encounters between Native and French peoples."

Frenzied though the work may have been, all are pleased with the result.

"We have some really great objects including two rare 16-foot birch bark canoes," said Matthew Anderson, Heritage Society Curator. Anderson explained that one of the canoes was commissioned by Fort Miami for the Shared Waters exhibit. "Our canoe was built by craftsmen from the Upper Peninsula who still use the original Native American techniques." He explained that the birch bark canoe was probably the most important invention to come of out early North America.
