    About Margo Anderson

Margo Anderson was born in 1957, and has been interested in historical costume since the age of six.She went to her first Renaissance Faire in 1973, wearing a costume that can charitably be described as "an ambitious effort."But even then she was hooked, and began creating Renaissance costumes, first for herself, then for friends, and, as her skill and knowledge grew, finally for customers.

One of her first jobs involved working on costumes at a casino showroom in Lake Tahoe. This introduction to professional-level theatrical costuming was followed by a position at Bob Mandel's costume shop in San Francisco. The next years saw Margo in a variety of sewing-related enterprises: in the wedding industry, she performed alterations and created custom wedding gowns. She also managed the sewing machine departments at several locations of a chain of fabric stores.By that time the Renaissance costumes she created for a few select customers had begun winning awards, including CostumeCon, and, at the Renaissance Pleasure Faire one year, Best Children's Costume, Best Adult Noble, and Best of Show. She also judged the Renaissance Pleasure Faire costume Contest (but not the same year, of course!)

(Some of these costumes can be seen in the gallery at Margo's personal website, One Tough Costumer.)

While living in the Bay Area she worked in the costume shop at one of San Francisco's leading theatre companies. This return to theatrical costuming allowed her to work closely with some of the best designers, costumers, and tailors in the business, and her skills increased dramatically.Much of the professional technique she acquired in that job has been passed on as some of the detailed instructions in the pattern manuals.

She has been active in the Society for Creative Anachronism, where she is known as Lady Maudeleyn of Bryn Aur.

In 1999, an opportunity presented itself and she leaped at the chance to start her dream business, Historic Costume Patterns.

Margo has taught a number of classes for various agencies including the Society for Creative Anachronism, the California State Park system, and a Waldorf school, with a focus on costume construction techniques and Elizabethan costuming in particular. She is available for lectures, workshops, and seminars, and in the future hopes to continue her public appearances between developing new patterns.

Margo is planning to attend Costume College in Los Angeles in June 2003, though she won't be participating as either a presenter or a vendor. This was a recent development, and the possibility came up too late to get paperwork in for either a presenter or a vendor's table.Still, if you're there, come up and introduce yourself, because she'd love to meet you!

More immediately, we will be sponsoring (and Margo will be among the judges at) the costume competitions at the Renaissance Mayfaire, which is produced by the Cedar Springs Waldorf School, in Placerville, CA, on the weekend of May 17-18.This is our "home" faire, one that we helped start in our home town, and we're very proud of how it's grown in such a short time.If you're in the Sacramento area that weekend, drive east to Placerville and come see us at the county fairgrounds!

Her most recent public appearance was at CostumeCon 21 in Chicago, for the weekend of April 18-21, 2003.We sold our patterns there, Margo participated in a few panels (and took on a presentation on "Fashion Illustration for Dummies" when the scheduled presenter couldn't make it!).
    ...
In February 2003 we attended the Renaissance Symposium in San Jose, CA, where Margo reprised her lecture on "Quenching the Wench."In addition, she gave a detailed presentation showing how to convert a back-lacing bodice to front- or side-lacing.

On September 7th, 2002, Margo was the Keynote Speaker at the Society for Creative Anachronism's 2002 Knowne World Costume Symposium (click it for the official website) in Grand Rapids, Michigan. She gave the keynote address on the topic of "Quenching the Wench: The Myths and Realities of 16th Century English Working Class Women's Clothing."Margo had a great time, and sends her heartfelt thanks to the organizers who made it possible.

If you couldn't make it there, don't worry. We won't say you didn't miss a good show, but some of the material will make its way into the "Thoughts on Costuming" page on this website, and the underlying concepts will continue to be applied in future patterns.

Future lectures and public appearances will be announced here, as well as on Margo's mailing list.If you're interested in having Margo at your event, email us!
