According to LCSC Executive Director Margie Anderson who nominated the couple, the senior couple - she is 83 and he is 85 - beat out hundreds of nominees for the honor of becoming a finalist.

Apparently, the two are a package deal, joked Anderson. And it is a deal the council has benefited from.

"He has become our resident handy-man," said Anderson of Orion Dickson who also joined the Board of Directors in 2002.Besides making any repairs that have been needed over the last several years, Orion Dickson and his wife have helped the agency move into a larger space (with only one other volunteer) and have just made themselves available to any need that arises.

Like the time the ceiling caved in.

"After a ceiling leak, they helped with cleaning, moving furniture and wallpapering," wrote Anderson to the Strobel award committee.

"For length of service and impact, they just stood out," said Anderson.

Margie Anderson, executive director of the Literacy Council of Sumner County, said the cuts would have a serious impact on that organization as well. The Literacy Council received $3,000 from the county last year.

"It will hurt," Anderson said."We'll probably go back about 10 years."

The Literacy Council provides tutoring to children and adults and offers vision screenings.

"This is probably one of the tightest years we've had in about 10 years. It would definitely hurt," Anderson said."We're already scrambling.I don't know how much more we can scramble. We try not to turn people away."

Anderson said that, without county funding, the organization would likely have to reduce its hours and start turning people away from its doors.

"It's hard to understand why they (commissioners) don't see a value in human skills," Anderson said.

According to Literacy Council Director Margie Anderson, the tournament was the brainchild of Hendersonville author Monica Wessel.
    ...
Anderson said that Wessel first came upon the idea while promoting one of her books in North Carolina where a Scrabble® tournament was being held.
    ...
Anderson added that her group soon discovered a relationship between the National Scrabble Association and Pro-Literacy, a national literacy support membership group that the Literacy Council of Sumner County belongs to.She said her group has been getting pointers from the National Scrabble Association on what to do to make their tournament a success.

"They see it as a way to raise funds as well as awareness," said Anderson who has directed the Literacy Council since its inception in 1983.

According to Event Organizer Joy Delk, who also serves as secretary to the Literacy Council's Board of Directors, the game of Scrabble®, where one uses seven tiles to create words for points, is the perfect game for those who promote literacy. She said that with around 30 entries so far, the community has responded well to the idea of a tournament here.
    ...
Anderson said that she would like to have more teams sign up for the event. She pointed out that her group has secured an extensive list of prizes for the tournament including a two-night stay in a Gatlinburg chalet, a free hour of reflexology from Hendersonville's Peaceful Soles, a $50 savings bond, a free month's membership to local health clubs Curves and Bodies Under Construction and dinners to Steamboat Bill's and Dicky's Lighthouse as well as gift certificates from local retailers.
