At that same time, Kent Anderson was selected to become the Executive Director of IIAR. That decision set the stage for the growth and success IIAR has enjoyed over the better part of the past two decades.
While the Board of Directors gets the credit for hiring Kent, he gets a lot of the credit for providing the leadership that has produced the growth and success of our organization since the move to Washington.
During his tenure, first as Executive Director and later as President, our membership has grown nearly five fold. Membership benefits have expanded to include the largest on-line technical resource library. We published the Piping Handbook and the Ammonia Data Book. We have a training library of 12 DVDs, of which almost half of them are also available in Spanish. We also developed the Process Safety Management and Risk Management Program, and education guidelines.
When the Board made the decision to hire Kent, they wanted to expand IIAR's advocacy role. The Board wanted a strong voice to represent our industry's interests in the place where a significant amount of regulation that affects our industry is created. The Board wanted someone who knew the regulatory process and the players; someone who could build bridges between our industry and regulators.
Before Kent joined the IIAR staff, we tended to react to regulation, rather than influence it. For the past two years, Kent has represented IIAR on the Chemical Sector Advisory Council which has served as the sounding board for the Department of Homeland Security in the development of the new chemical facility anti-terrorism security (CFATS) regulation. Having Kent involved through the formulation of the new regulation proved to be a significant benefit for our industry. As a result of Kent's hard work, our organization now has even greater credibility with regulators.
Having said all of that, I am informing the members of IIAR that Kent has decided to step down from the day-to-day management of IIAR to become President Emeritus. In that position he will remain a valuable resource for IIAR. -
