   Lee Anderson received 654.
   
   As many as 1 , 700 countywide absentee ballots have not been returned. It was uncertain how many of those ballots were from within the Friday Harbor Port District.
   
   Commissioners set the budget and policies for the port district , which owns the Port of Friday Harbor Marina , a seaplane base , Friday Harbor Airport , Jackson's Beach , and a public boat ramp. The port district also owns the waterfront in Friday Harbor from Spring Street to the yacht club , and owns Fairweather Park adjacent to the marina.

   Anderson , a retired businessman , founded San Juan Island Dollars for Scholars. He believed the port district should decrease its debt before pursuing economic development projects. He suggested the port take a pro-active role in whale education and research , perhaps donating a small percent of revenue to education and to help organizations like Soundwatch.
   
   The port exists to serve the people , not the other way around , Anderson said during the campaign. They should maintain , not seek to grow , the island's economy. If they do a good job , growth will take care of itself..

   I know Lee to be hard working , honest and knowledgeable. He is the kind of person that I want working for me.. Lee was successful as a businessman because he does what he says. We need that kind of leadership at the Port of Friday Harbor desperately.

   Lee's leadership skills are apparent. He is president-elect of Kiwanis , president and founder of San Juan Island's Dollars for Scholars , a member of the San Juan Public Schools Foundation and a successful retired business owner.
   
   Philosophically , Lee believes that the best way to achieve economic viability starts with sound stewardship of our environment. We couldn't agree more.

   I have known Lee Anderson for five years. Two of those years we have worked together as founding board members of Dollars for Scholars Foundation.
   
   DFS was Lee's idea because he saw a need in the community to provide more support for those students who want to pursue higher education.
   
   Lee is a retired businessman who also serves on the San Juan Public Schools Foundation board and is active in Kiwanis. He has leadership skills and a solid business background that can be very useful on the Port Commission.
   
   There are many important issues facing the Port of Friday Harbor in the next decade.
   
   Our port is deeply in debt and we need a fiscally responsible candidate who can help to reduce that debt. I believe that Lee Anderson is that candidate.
   
   In the recent past there have been several controversial decisions made by our Friday Harbor port commissioners. I believe these were a result of lack of communication rather than bad faith. Lee Anderson has committed to work with ALL of the people of San Juan and to listen to all voices before making decisions.
   
   I plan to vote for Lee Anderson for port commissioner and I hope you will also.
