DICKINSON — Holly Anderson knew this day would come.She just wishes it didn't hurt so much.

The Dickinson High School senior has set her last ball for the Lady Gators volleyball team because she must have surgery to repair torn ligaments in an ankle.

She said she suffered the injury two years ago but kept putting off the surgery because she wanted to play her favorite sports — volleyball and softball.Anderson, The Daily News' Softball Player of the Year this year, has given an oral commitment to play softball for the University of Houston.

Anderson told Houston coach Kyla Holas about her ankle, and Holas asked her to have the surgery now so it would not interfere with her final high school softball season.

"I'm disappointed, but I understand," Anderson said."If anybody had to make the decision I did, I'm sure they'd make the same one."

For Anderson, it means the end of her volleyball career.

Anderson still will be with the team to watch.She hopes the tears she cried Friday night after Dickinson beat Mont Belvieu Barbers Hill are the last ones.

"We have a bunch of talent," Anderson said.
