Church members are expected to do everything from landscaping to scrubbing graffiti off bathroom stalls, said Harvey Anderson, associate director of metro outreach services at Perimeter Church.Perimeter is located in north Fulton and is a member of Unite.
"There's stuff going on all over the place," he said.
Some people will spread 1,000 bales of pine straw at Norcross High School's campus.Others will build a faux grocery aisle at Joan Glancy Memorial Hospital's rehabilitation center, so trauma victims and others can regain such skills as reaching for a box of cereal.Still others will visit homes in a Norcross subdivision Saturday and collect food for the Norcross Cooperative Ministry.
In the process, Anderson said, churches will make connections â€" not just with the schools or centers they serve, but also with other churches.
"There are some really good relationships developing" from the cooperation between congregations, Anderson said.
The relationships have strengthened ties between churches and expanded the reach of Compassion In Action, Anderson said.Seven churches participated in the first compassion weekend. This year, Anderson and others anticipate 40 or more.
Mandy Wellington plans to show up at Norcross High and dig her hands in some pine straw.Wellington is director of Norcross Christian Learning Center, which offers off-campus religious classes to public school students. She's also a member of Cornerstone Bible Church in Lilburn.
She's happy to get sweaty for the kids at Norcross."I think this is about serving the schools and serving the students," she said.

"There are food drives, home repairs for DFACS homes, widows and the elderly, nursing home visits and apartment block parties," said Harvey Anderson of Perimeter Church.
...
Patients can then practice things like getting into and out of a car," Anderson said Perimeter Church will begin the project next weekend, and volunteers with Gwinnett Great Days of Service will finish it a few weeks later.
