    The extensive field work in Mexico and Argentina brought him together with Dean Amadon, the Curator of Birds for the American Museum of Natural History. This eminent scientist marveled at Eckelberry's "amazing knowledge of birds" and Don's dawn to dark work ethic, which kept him occupied observing, sketching and writing up the descriptions of all he saw. Amadon would later seek Don's artistic skills for the illustration of Eagles, Hawks and Falcons of the World.

    Dr. Dean Amadon, Lamont Curator Emeritus in the Department of Ornithology, passed away this weekend at his home in Tenafly, NJ.Dean joined the Museum in 1937 after graduating from Hobart College.Except for service in the Pacific during WWII, he remained at the Museum during his entire career.He received his doctorate at Cornell University in 1947 with a thesis on Hawaiian honeycreepers.Dean was appointed Assistant Curator in 1940, Associate Curator in 1950, and Lamont Curator in 1955.He was Chairman of the Department from 1957 until 1973.Dean was past president of the American Ornithologists' Union, the John Burroughs Memorial Association, and the Linnaean Society of New York; he had been a director of the Explorers Club, the Delaware Museum of Natural History, and the Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University.Dean was the author or co-author of over 400 publications, including three books.

    Dean remained active at the Museum throughout his retirement and most recently was honored with a celebration of his 90th birthday this past June.Dean was always a very generous and collegial person; he will be deeply missed by his many friends at the Museum.

    TENAFLY, N.J. (AP) Dean Amadon, an authority on birds of prey and former curator of birds at the American Museum of Natural History, has died.He was 90.

    Amadon died Sunday at his home in Tenafly, but the cause of death was not disclosed.A longtime museum staffer, he traveled to exotic places for field work while writing numerous articles and books, including several works that are considered classics by naturalists and bird lovers.

    Amadon was Cornell University student when he began his career at the museum in 1937, when he was hired to catalog various bird eggs.He was appointed as the museum's Lamont curator in 1955, serving until 1973, and also was chairman of the museum's ornithology department during that time.

    During his tenure, Amadon was responsible for the museum's bird research center and served as custodian of the million bird specimens in the museum collection.After his retirement, Amadon continued to serve as a consultant for many years.
