Tommy Dorsey's band was playing in the background at the Valentine's Day Dance at Cornell University in 1947, when Bob Amadon slipped a diamond ring on Peg Merritt's finger and she said yes.

Bob said he was attending Cornell on a veterans program, so money was tight when he was courting his bride-to-be.
"I didn't have too much to spend in those days, so we didn't do anything fancy," he said."I bought the ring by paying the jeweler $3 or $4 a month."
A fire in downtown Ithaca in October 1946 led to the fateful meeting between the soon-to-be sweethearts.Bob went to the fire with a friend and met Peg's sister, Helen.Helen introduced Peg to Bob.
Four months after he met her, Bob slipped the diamond ring on Peg's finger and then, four months to the day later, on June 14, 1947, they were married.
After he graduated from Cornell, the couple moved to Davenport Center and he began teaching vocational agriculture at Charlotte Valley Central School, where he taught for 18 years.He also taught at Franklin Central School for 10 years.
