Understanding the meaning behind each and every word of ritual prayers transforms the words from mere recitation to meditation, said Carmelo Alvarez, dean of students and director of the chapel at Christian Theological Seminary, 1000 W. 42nd St.

"You memorize your Social Security number, but you don't memorize it in the same way you memorize a prayer.A Social Security number is important, but a prayer is not a number and it is not neutral," said Alvarez, who teachers courses in liturgy."If you pray in a mechanical sense, it's not useful. You have to pray with meaning.

"The intention of these prayers is to provide some religious affection and some connection to the divine," Alvarez said. Many prayers, handed down through the ages, are also tools to guide people when they are searching for the right words.

The Lord's Prayer, also called the Sunday Prayer, is a ritual of many faiths, recited in a variety of languages by those of many cultures, Alvarez said.In The Three Greatest Prayers, St. Thomas Aquinas explains the words: "Our Father," meaning "God is our Father and we owe him because he is our Father."The text is further explained: "We call God 'Father' because he created us, he governs us, he adopted us."Catholic theologians believe the prayer should be recited to acknowledge God's greatness and dependence on him.
