Elkins Superintendent Robert Allen said Thursday evening by e-mail that he will resign from the position, effective at the end of the school year.

" I have decided that this will be my last year at Elkins and I wanted the Board to have ample time to select someone else, " he wrote.

Allen has worked for the district for 21 years.He was the principal of Elkins High School for many years before becoming superintendent about seven years ago.

Although he has worked at Elkins for many years, he lives in Fayetteville.His wife, Judy, is a French teacher at the Fayetteville School District's two junior high schools.

"Ken was having a sale with us and put a dollar on this old broken TV he had so someone would take it," Allen said.

"He said 'Where do you live?' and the man said 'Anderson,' " Allen recalled.

Allen told the man about the incident the previous year.

"He said it wasn't him, it was his twin brother," Allen recalled with a laugh."Later, his twin walks up to our sale!"

Allen has had a sale each year during city-wide, but the memory of the "sale" of the broken TV with the dollar taped to it stays in his memory.

A long time teacher and school principal, Allen said he sees a number of his former students come by his sale each year, bringing their own children with them.

"Oh, that's always fun!"he said.

"We have always had pretty good sales, with 40 or 50 people in the garage most of the time," said Allen."It's kind of a social event, too."

Allen, who resides on Mesa Drive, remembers when an Empire District Electric Company truck became stuck in traffic congestion while out on an outage call.

Elkins Superintendent Robert Allen, who was also the high school principal before becoming superintendent, said he thinks the dogs started visiting occasionally in the late 1990s.

He said he can't recall ever finding anything as a result of a drug dog search.

Robert Allen, superintendent of the Elkins School District, said he attended grades K-6 at the UA's Peabody School in the late 1950s and early 1960s.It was housed on campus in Peabody Hall."They sometimes called it the training school," Allen said."We usually had several student teachers during the time I was there."

Many of the students who attended had parents who worked for the university, as Allen did.

The school was small and usually had classrooms with combined grade levels, Allen recalled.The school gave no letter grades on tests, simply right and wrong answers, and parents did not receive report cards."It was kind of an experimental school," he said.

ELKTON -- With more than 40 years in education, Robert Allen of Wenatchee, Wash., is heading the Elkton School District as interim superintendent this school year.

Allen has taken over her duties of serving as superintendent and principal at the high school and elementary school for the district with about 160 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and 13 preschoolers.

Elkton School Board member Daniel Burke said the school board thought Allen would be a good fit for the district.

Allen decided to take the job because he believes he has a lot of knowledge to give children.

"I wanted to work more with kids, and I like small school districts," the 69-year-old said.

He's served as a middle and high school teacher, counselor, assistant principal, principal and superintendent in six school districts.He was superintendent for 14 years in Bridgeport, Wash., north of Wenatchee.He retired in 1998, but went on to serve as superintendent in Echo, in Eastern Oregon, from 1998 to 2001.He returned to Wenatchee and took a break from education.

He's never lived in Southern Oregon before, but it's an area that interests him, he said.His wife, Betty, and 14-year-old stepdaughter, Mercedes, will make the move after selling their house in Wenatchee.Allen would like to work in education for a few more years, and said he may stay in the area.

He said he's looking forward to the school year.Because he took the helm right before school started, he said he's learning right along with the children.
