The Extra Miler- Column #32 - Kelly Allen Has A Giving Soul
    ...
Kelly Allen, an athlete, musician, and Jeffersonville High School (JHS) senior honor student with a 3.9 GPA, is living proof of a teenager who characteristically fits the Extra Miler profile.

Kelly has a vibrant spirit of giving in her soul. A classic example occurred last Halloween. Kelly had befriended Mai, a JHS foreign exchange student and fellow marching band member. Mai was with Kelly when the Director of Bands, John Cooksey, advised they would be practicing on Halloween night and could dress in costume during practice.
    ...
Mai, never having experienced Halloween, asked Kelly why students would dress up in costumes. Kelly explained the concept of trick-or-treating; however, Mai was confused. She said the Japanese people would not hand out free candy to children coming to their homes.

Kelly decided that Mai needed to experience the generosity of her neighbors through the tradition of Halloween and arranged for several neighbors to allow Mai to trick or treat after the designated hours...in costume. Kelly's eyes light up and she becomes animated as she talks about how excited her friend was to experience trick-or-treating in Southern Indiana. Mai is now in Japan; however, she and Kelly continue to correspond.

Kelly is very giving of her time and energy. She has been in the Big Brother/Big Sister program for two years and happily describes how proud she is of her "little sister," Abby, who is now in third grade.

Since eighth grade, Kelly has performed with the JHS band.
    ...
He adds, "Kelly has an innate ability to know when a person needs assistance or is feeling stressed. She goes out of her way to make them feel comfortable and safe in their environment."

When asked about the first time she volunteered, Kelly replied, "I went with my grandmother to our church Clothe-A-Child event and it was a lot of fun helping the girl, who was older, pick out clothes. She adds, "That experience left me with a positive memory and a desire to continue helping others."

Kelly is active in the JHS Anchor Club. The Club sponsor, Nancy Molnar, describes Kelly as, "a mature and focused young woman who is an all-around good person.
    ...
Ms. Molnar adds, "When you give Kelly a project, it is easy to forget about it because you know Kelly will get it done quickly and efficiently and she will give it 110 percent."
    ...
If you ask Kelly Allen about her life philosophy, she doesn't hesitate with a response, "I like to be around people who are happy and I'll work hard to create situations where people are having fun and laughing together. This writer can attest to this as fact because one evening last October I greeted a young Asian girl at my door, trick-or-treating and laughing with her friends. The pure joy on her face told me she would never forget this representative act of love or her wonderful friends in Southern Indiana. Kelly, thank you for being a Southern Indiana Extra Miler.

Kindness Tip of the Month: Kelly encourages our Southern Indiana readers to perform every day acts of kindness. She closed our interview with these words, "You never know how impacting a simple smile or hello can be to someone who is having a really bad day and it is such a simple thing to do.

SCRAPBOOK-The Ron Collins Home Page - [Cached Version]
Published on: 8/8/1995    Last Visited: 9/28/2000

Coach Kelly Allen was enthused about the swim, despite the extra time in the water. The last mile he slowed way down, which brought us in a little late, explained Allen, who worked one of two kayaks that bookcased Collins to keep him on course.

To know the water yuppie Collins is to know two lifestyles.

His brown hair tinged with chlorine yellowish-green from morning workouts at Clearwater's The Long Center, Collins admits he be not the usual focused athlete.

he be quick to show off photographs of his 2-year-old son, Matthew, and speak proudly of his wife, Lea Ann, a vice president at SunTrust Bank. And he does have swimmer's credentials, with 25 years of swimming competitively.

But the stocky Collins, weighing 192 pounds pre-swim and 185 afterward, do not allude to any man vs. nature challenge as the reason for the marathon swim.

Instead, he be a man seeking a good time. After his swim and kissing his family, he reached for a swig from a waiting champagne bottle.it be a great reason to have a party at Whiskey Joe's with my friends, he said of the swim.

For someone about to swim an endurance-testing distance - his previous feat was 12.5 miles in Key West - his approach was surprisingly nonchalant. On the eve of the marathon, his meal, he said, consisted of chicken wings, ice cream, beers and something else. He showed up at my house last night at 10 : 30, said neighbor Chris Hannukainen, who stood by the shoreline to wish him well. And I wondered, Why be not he asleep?' During the swim, Collins was fueled by Snickers candy bars and freshwater - consumed while choppy waves pounded at his face.

He joked after coming out of the water about his slurred speech. My tongue is swollen, he said after hosing off the dirty raccoon eyes from the goggles and the debris in the saltwater.

i be used to drinking saltwater, said Collins a week before his record swim.Having just returned from a few practice laps in the bay, Collins was sockless and tieless in the plush conference room at Lawson Financial Corp., where he be worked the past seven years.A varsity swimmer at Virginia Tech who graduated in 1985, he refers to himself as a sponger, meaning he be adept on a boogie board.

The swimming do not get you tired, he added, explaining that his main concerns were the weather, which turned out perfect, and touching bottom, which do not happen, thanks to navigator Peter Clark, director of Tampa Baywatch, an environmental group.

Collins' swim, certified by the International Swimming Hall of Fame and sanctioned by U.S. Masters Swimming as a marathon solo swim, is a prelude to the May 2 three-mile race across Tampa Bay from the Gandy Beach to Picnic Island.Sponsored by Baywatch, entry forms are available by calling (813) 896-5320.

    Collins plans to participate.

Asked if he will sit and relax behind his office desk today, Collins, walking with a limp, answered, Yeah, right..
