Kellie Allen is the coordinator of Native projects for Careforce International, the organizers of BASE Camp on the Rez.Allen said the BASE program is intended to inspire the youth."One of the main goals," she explained "would be ... to develop leaders in the community.We have sort of a train-the-trainers motto where we can teach these youth how to be successful in their own life and to be role models."Allen says the role models will provide an opportunity to "the cycle of hopelessness that so many are caught in." There are 10 members on the BASE team, all between the ages of 18 and 32, who organize various activities.

Allen said Aboriginal team leaders and members have joined the program often through their annual Young Native Leaders Conference."A lot of it's just word of mouth," she said "basically in some of the communities that we've visited people have said ëYeah, I really want to do this next year' or want to be involved even this summer."
