"In a cultural melting-pot like California, language can be a major barrier to fair and equitable access to health care," said Katharine Allen, President of CHIA, who co-presented the award along with Tom Riley, CHIA's Senior Director.

Katharine Allen is a Spanish>English language interpreter, translator, trainer, and consultant, and the owner of Sierra Sky Interpreting and Translation. She is president of the California Healthcare Interpreting Association (CHIA), and is the creator of CHIA's LISTEN hospital assessment program. In addition, she serves as assistant administrator of ATA's Interpreters Division, and is a trainer for the Connecting Worlds Healthcare Interpreter curriculum. She will begin her studies in interpretation and translation at the Monterey Institute for International Studies in the fall of 2006.
