Dr Andrew Allen obtained a BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Biochemistry from the University of Newcastle in 1981, and a PhD in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Essex in 1990. He subsequently conducted research into the trace component chemistry of the remote marine troposphere at the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, New Zealand, until the closure of DSIR in 1992 when he obtained a research fellowship at the University of São Paulo to study the properties of biomass burning aerosols in the Amazon basin, as well as indoor air quality in urban areas of southeastern Brazil. He later worked within the Soil Science Division of the UK Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research where he studied greenhouse gas emissions from grazed farmland. He joined the University of Birmingham in 1994.
