    Alexander accepted into state leadership program

    St. Mary's announced Sharon Alexander, associate director of nursing at St. Mary's Medical Center, has been accepted into the West Virginia Nursing Leadership Institute.Created as part of the West Virginia University School of Nursing-Charleston Division and the Charleston Area Medical Center Health Education and Research Institute, the statewide program is designed to further prepare nurses for positions of leadership and to assist in recruiting and retaining nurses in the healthcare profession.

    Alexander is one of 30 nurses from across the state who will take part in the interactive leadership program.

    Libby Bosley, director of nursing services at St. Mary's, said in a press release "Alexander is an outstanding nurse and leader who desires to take her skills to the next level.

    Sharon Alexander, R.N., M.S.N., recently accepted the position of associate director of nursing with St. Mary,s Medical Center.

    Alexander graduated from Berea College in 1978 with a bachelor of science in nursing degree and earned a master of science in nursing degree from Bellarmine College in 2004.She joined St. Mary,s in 1979 where she has served as permanent charge nurse, unit coordinator and clinical manager in the medical/surgical area.She is certified in medical/surgical nursing.

    Alexander also was a recipient of the Spirit of St. Mary,s Award, which recognizes employees who demonstrate exceptional service and care to patients and their families, fellow co-workers and the community.

    Alexander is one of 30 nurses from across the state who will take part in the interactive leadership program.During the next year, she will attend three two-and-a-half day sessions of classes at WVU's Charleston Division campus.During the sessions, Alexander will learn motivating, negotiating and decision-making strategies to become an effective leader in her profession.In addition, Alexander will design and implement an individualized leadership project for recruiting and retaining nurses in the Huntington area.
