With Fraser Downs' 2007-08 meet ready to kick off this Friday, September 14, Trot Insider today contacted BCSA/BCSBS executive director David Aldred to see how things are going at the Surrey facility.

"There have been qualifiers put in over the track and everybody is gearing up for the new meet," said Aldred.

"The Open stakes schedule starts off on September 22nd and the qualifying leg for the Clash of the Pacific goes on the 28th right before the Sandown Breeders Stakes on the 29th," said Aldred, who also stated that the field for Friday's Open Pace is proof that top stock is arriving already.

"Obviously there are a lot of Open stakes events in the front end of the meet, but the purses are spread out really well. There will still be a lot of purses up for grabs right into June so everyone gets a shot at them."

Aldred explained that horsemen are keen to get back racing at the Surrey plant, and that a healthy amount of horses entered for this weekend is an indication that Fraser will have decent field sizes right out of the gate.

"We've been working with the track to get the levels worked out on the track," Aldred said about the racing oval."And, as part of a proactive safety move, there has also been safety wraps put around the bases of the light standards, which are somewhat close to the racing action at Fraser. Some lighting has also been improved on the backstretch and we are hoping for more minor cosmetic work to be done around the track as well."

From all accounts, good promotions played a paramount role in the success of the recently-concluded three-day meet at Sandown Park, and Aldred confirmed with Trot Insider that they do not stop there.

He said that fan appreciation nights, activities, prize games, golfing, 99 cent hamburgers and "anything to get fans involved" will be one of the themes of the Fraser meet. - SC.
