   The distinction of being the first members of the public to make a donation went to Ballaugh residents Frank and Barbara Aldred of Ballaterson Fields. The amount of individual donations are not being revealed, but their¹s is described as substantial. Mr Aldred was managing director of Edmundson Electrical in the UK from 1974 to 1987. He and his Manx-born wife retired to the Island after that, Mrs Aldred being a daughter of the late Edward Corlett, a maths teacher and deputy headmaster at Ramsey Grammar School. Mr Aldred said : We are keen to support the Manx yacht going round the world. Having owned an ocean-going yacht myself I know something of the event and the publicity it will generate for the Island. The Isle of Man is a great place to live and I am certain it will benefit from the attention focused on it during the build-up and the race itself. This is certainly an imaginative concept and I wish the organisers every success ­ they deserve it.. Although Mr Aldred ­ who was in the Royal Navy for three years ­ no longer owns a yacht he retains membership of the Castletown and Derbyhaven Yacht Club, which was the first local yachting organisation to make a financial contribution to the Challenge. Next major event on the calendar for the Isle of Man Global Challenge team is the visit, next month, of three yachts which took part in the last round-the-world event. They are scheduled to arrive on May 7 and depart May 13.
