Grouse Mountain started the weekly social event, to run Wednesday nights at 6 p.m. throughout the summer, to meet the demands of avid Grouse Grind trekkers who want to meet and mingle at the top of the climb, Grouse spokesperson Kelly Aldinger said.
Hikers can meet at the bottom of the Grind at 6 p.m., or gather at Altitudes Bistro at the top, where a DJ spins chilled tunes and hikers can enjoy food and drink specials.
"It was sunny, there was a solid turnout and everyone that came out was really excited," Aldinger said. "We expect the numbers to go up week by week."
Aldinger said the social night is a chance for hikers to share training tips, talk about their favourite hiking shoes, meet new hiking partners or compare times.
"A lot of people don't have regular partners to do the Grind with, so this is a great way to build the community," Aldinger said.
Although it's a social occasion complete with snacks and alcohol, it's not exactly a party atop Grouse, she added.
"People that attend these nights are health conscious," Aldinger said. "It's not really a nachos and shot scene."
Depending on weather, the social gatherings will take place on the patio with a brilliant view of the sunset over Vancouver, or indoors.
Aldinger added the diversity of people who tackle the 2.9-km Grouse Grind trail ensures that there is a potential hiking companion for everyone, no matter their age, gender and fitness level.
