Little Mikey the poodle becomes an unlikely hero for his owner (West Central Tribune)

According to Anthony Aldinger, principal of Schaeffer Elementary School, the environmental area is a unique outdoor classroom and will be an important learning tool -- not only for Schaeffer students, but also for school districts throughout eastern Pennsylvania.

"We want to bring environmental literacy into the reading, writing, math, social studies and science curriculum," Aldinger stated."With an eco-garden and pond of this size and quality, we can take learning beyond the bricks and mortar boundaries of a traditional school -- and allow teachers to make the curriculum come alive and hands-on for the children," he said.

Schools and other groups interested in studying at the Schaeffer Environmental Area may contact school principal Anthony Aldinger at (717) 291-1733.

"It has the "wow' factor," said Tony Aldinger, principal of the just-opened, newly renovated Schaeffer Elementary School as he welcomed the public into the building for the first time Wednesday night.

A hands-on discovery or science laboratory will be a focus for the school, Aldinger said, and core subjects like reading and math will be taught through science lessons.

"Science is our signature," Aldinger said.

He pointed out the use of green paint, natural oak woodwork and leaf-patterned counters to underscore the environmental theme.

Oak pedestal pieces, incorporated into the building, will provide ledges for aquariums and terrariums throughout the building, Aldinger said.

And there's the pond.

High Industries donated the money for the school's ecology center.It includes a large pond and waterfall surrounded by a natural-looking concrete deck imprinted with the tracks of animals native to Pennsylvania.

Aldinger said students will research and landscape around the pond.

Inside the building is an observatory station where students can watch wildlife through binoculars and record activity on the pond.

"I want this to be a place where students want to come and learn," Aldinger said.

It's hard for moms and dads to keep tabs on every scrap of clothing, every new toy or gadget, Aldinger said.

What winds up in the lost and found never ceases to astound Aldinger.

"You can always tell what sports teams were popular that year," he said."It's kind of a historical record of clothing."

"We look within our budget means and we look at is it cost effective to tear down or renovate what we have, and I think we're doing a combination of both to meet the needs and keep it updated and modern for the next several years," Anthony Aldinger, Schaeffer Elementary School Principal, says.

Those who know older schools best, urge people to remember that time is working against them, and a little help will go a long way.

"The basic creature comforts that you and I would need to perform as adults in any workplace, that's what we would need.
