Costs of the funeral were paid by Candy Alderman, a hospital employee who could not bear the thought that the baby would lack a proper burial.

Alderman ordered a marble nameplate for William.She paid $350 for a white casket the size of a shoe box, 8 inches by 14 inches.

"When I picked out the casket, I just fell apart," Alderman said."It was so tiny."

An administrative coordinator at Sacred Heart Medical Center, she is not rich.A florist donated the flowers, and the funeral home won't charge her for the burial.She plans to keep the costs below $1,000.

"He'd be 2 1/2now," said Alderman, 46."He'd be walking and talking."

Alderman, a single mother, spent $1,500 of her own money on Andrew's funeral.

"He did exist, even if for a short time," she said.
