Planned giving is key to supporting many organizations, said Betsy Alderman, director of planned giving for the Lee Memorial Health System Foundation in Lee County, Fla.

"People are getting more and more educated about this and they appreciate knowing they will be able to help," Alderman said.The oncology unit at The Children's Hospital of Southwest Florida is supported entirely by charitable gifts, she said.

"From our standpoint, if we know someone is planning a gift we can communicate with them about what their gift will mean," she said.
