Dr Belle Alderman is Australia's first Professor of Children's Literature.She has been a tertiary lecturer at the University of Canberra since the mid-1970s where, in the Division of Communication and Education, she teaches children's literature, creative writing for young people, and archival theory and practice. As the Collections Development Manager of the Lu Rees Archives, a research collection of Australian children's literature located at the University of Canberra, she is responsible for building this internationally- known research collection of books, manuscripts, artwork and associated material.She is also on the Editorial Board of AustLit The Australian Literature Gateway which provides web-based access to scholarly literature.She has held several offices in the Children's Book Council of Australia and is presently on the national body, the May Gibbs Children's Literature Trust, which supports the development of Australian children's literature.For distinguished services to children's literature, Dr Alderman was awarded the Dromkeen Medal in 1996 and the Nan Chauncy Award in 2000.
