When Richard Alder is not flat out - with his eyes on the sky and his feet on the ground - trying to ensure that NAFC's fleet of aircraft are always ready for its members to use at a moment's notice, he likes nothing better than taking advantage of his pilot's licence and just flying away.
Armed with a Diploma of Forestry and a Bachelor of Forest Science with Honours, Richard joined NAFC in October 2004 and strongly believes that his work at the Centre provides him with an ideal opportunity to progress and influence service delivery at a national level.
Having joined the working world in the late 1970's, Richard has experience in environmental management, forestry and fire operations. Prior to joining NAFC, he worked as the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment's Manager: Fire Operations and before that as its Manager: Aviation.
With this wide and varied experience under his belt, Richard is well qualified to take NAFC forward and believes that the great gains the States and Territories and New Zealand can make in terms of improving community safety in their jurisdictions will come through national and international cooperation and collaboration.
When asked to describe an average working day, Richard is quick to point out that no two days are ever the same and that he spends most of his time making sure that NAFC is always functioning properly, keeping in touch with its members and keeping its members in touch with each other as well as looking for, and realising, opportunities to achieve synergies and efficiencies and improve the effectiveness of what NAFC does.
Passionate about improving safety and driven by an inherent desire to improve things or make them work better, Richard was awarded the Australian Fire Service Medal in 2000 and the AFAC Achiever of the Year award in 2003 for his work on national cooperation and collaboration in aerial firefighting.
A Melbourne Demons supporter, Richard likes to spend his spare time with family, friends, watching footy, eating or fishing. -
