Lorna Call Alder has given unending, continuous service during the past 99 years of her life.

"My motto is to think of others before you think of yourself," Alder said.

When Alder was young her mother died, leaving Alder to take care of her eight living younger brothers and sisters.

"That's when giving service began," Alder said. "I was a mother figure to my brothers and sisters. It was the biggest service I have ever done."

Alder grew up in the Mexican Colonies. Her father, who was a bishop for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, taught his children the importance of giving to and helping others in need.

"He would administer to others through his family," Alder said.
    ...
"My mother taught me the beauty in nature," Alder said. "She could see beauty in everything--from weeds to butterfly wings. She would always say God put thorns on the earth to so we could clear them out of the way of others."

Alder received a master's degree in elementary education from Columbia University and went to post-graduate school at Berkley. She taught at Brigham Young University in the Elementary Education department for 35 years.

When Alder was 39 years old she married and had two sons. She has been an example to them of service throughout her life.

Even at 99 years old, Alder said she has to be doing something. Her hands are always busy preparing something to help someone.

She has crocheted and sown hundreds of caps, bandages and hospital dolls and donated them for humanitarian aid.

Alder has helped put together countless teddy bears the for Children's Justice Center, a center to help children who have been physically or sexually abused.

Every year she makes homemade Valentine's cards and Christmas decorations for people in her ward. When someone is down or has lost a loved one, Alder makes them a special cake that she calls a picnic cake.

"I've baked cakes for people who have lost their spouse," Alder said. "Sometimes they break down crying because they cannot believe a 99-year-old woman would think of them and bring them a cake."

Alder has served on the General Sunday School Board for her church for many years. While serving she had the opportunity to travel all over the world to places like Australia and New Zealand.

Alder has also served four different Spanish-speaking missions for her church: a proselyting mission to San Antonio, Texas and three temple missions to Peru, Guatemala and Mexico City.

Every Tuesday morning Alder faithfully goes to the Provo LDS temple to serve others for the day.

"I serve for selfish reasons--it makes me happy to help others," Alder said. "I end up humming all day when I know I've helped someone. That's why I keep serving--it makes me happy."

Alder said her favorite service to do is to give a smile.

"It's the cheapest and the greatest service someone can give, so I try to smile at everyone I see," Alder said.
