During the meeting at the hall, Allison Alder and Jessica McNally made a presentation on behalf of the Nakusp Youth Society.

Alder, who is president of the society, explained how the skateboard park idea was conceived and brought into existence through the involvement of youths and adults. The society raised $142,000 and has been a great success, Alder said.

Alder noted some of the other initiatives the society is working on, such as the survey asking youth what activities they'd like to do during the summer, and a possible "youth night" at Summit Lake Ski Hill. Alder then switched hats to talk about the Adult Basic Education program at Selkirk College, where she works as an instructor. "What we're doing is trying to help people get a leg up," she said. However, one of the biggest challenges facing ABE concerns government cuts to social services. Those on social assistance used to be told they had to upgrade their education, Alder explained. Now they're being told they have to get a job instead. "It's not realistic for every person," she said.
