They've invited some of the best choirs from around the state to compete, according to director Alan Alder.

"We have a school from Indianapolis, Lawrence Central High School, they have a very reputable program. They place in the top three wherever they go," Alder said.
    ...
"Some of them are average high school groups, and a great many are of Broadway quality," Alder said. Those competitors bring skills encompassing a range of dance styles from tap to hip-hop.

Alder said the Anderson High School all-girl ensemble, "Class Act," based their performance on a theme of "women of power and strength."
    ...
The "Showdown" has become the only local high school show choir competition, ever since Highland High School discontinued theirs a few years ago, according to Alder.

"Now you can consider us the resident show choir competition for the city of Anderson," Alder said.

The director said the school's gymnasium will be converted into a major event stage, complete with professional grade theatrical lighting and sound equipment.

The showdown will take place during the evening's events, once the preliminaries are all judged. The top-placing performers from each category come on stage for the main event.

As for the title, "A-Town Showdown," Alder said a combination of staff and students agreed it lent the show a certain authenticity.

"You know, all the kids refer to Anderson as 'A-Town,' and we were trying to figure out a way to incorporate that," he said.

Alan Alder, director of choral activities at Anderson High School, said show choir has changed since he was in it.

"I tell my kids it's gone from the step-touch style to the shuck-and-jive," he said.
    ...
Alder said he and his two choirs, an all-girl group, Class Act, and a mixed group, Singers Unlimited, are excited to be traveling for the competition.

"We always like to try new things and do new things," he said.

From the two Anderson High choirs the audience will hear several songs they've likely heard on the radio.

"The girls' group is doing a series of, basically, what I consider a girl power show," Alder said.

The other group, Singers Unlimited, will conclude their performance with the Destiny Child's hit Stand Up for Love.

Alder said such competitions give choir members a chance to socialize and also help them stay current on show choir techniques.

No criminal charges will be filed against Alan Alder, the choir director at Anderson High School, but an internal investigation by the Anderson Community Schools continues.

Alder has been on paid administrative leave since September after the Anderson Police Department began an investigation of allegations that Alder acted inappropriately with two students.ACS hired Alder in June 2001; he is paid $43,799 per year.

At recent school board meetings, groups of parents and students requested that Alder be reinstated to his job because no criminal charges were going to be filed.

Alder has no listed telephone number and could not be reached for comment by The Herald Bulletin.
    ...
Cummings said the allegations didn't constitute a criminal violation but that there was strong evidence that Alder acted inappropriately with at least one student.
    ...
"After a thorough review, I have concluded that there is insufficient evidence at this time to support the filing of criminal charges against Alder," wrote Cummings.
    ...
"The police interviewed several students and a former colleague of Alder. The investigation revealed comments by Alder with one or more of his students which seem troubling and inappropriate but does not, however, rise to the level of criminal conduct."

Cummings said Alder did not cooperate with the police investigation.
    ...
"I have never heard Mr. Alder make any inappropriate remarks to his students," she said, expressing approval for no charges being filed.
    ...
I am a strong supporter of Mr.Alder and everything he stands for,the kids are just not the same without him he is the one that keeps those kids going and they do the same for him.
    ...
It is apparent that since the Prosecutor could not find any shred of evidence against Mr Alder he is now trying to further discredit Mr Alder and force ACS to make a bad decision because of inappropriate use of his power as an "elected official".His personal comments are out of line and should not have been printed! To my knowledge Mr Alder was never contacted nor questioned concerning any of this.It smacks of a good ole boy witch hunt!He belongs back in the classroom and should receive a formal written apology from our city government, ACS, and the newspaper.

11/23/2005I feel as a student at Anderson High School and a student apart of the choral department I feel like people are trying to give Mr. Alder a bad name.He is one of the best teachers I know.If the police department is done with the investigation then they shouldn't make their comments.Mr. Alder is a great person in school and out.I'm very sad with this being my last year at AHS and not having my awesome choir teacher.

11/23/2005I don't know Mr. Alder or very much about this matter; but no charges being filed regarding any incident NEVER means a person is innocent.
    ...
How was Alan supposed to cooperate with the investigation when he was never questioned or even told what the charges were?In addition, no parents were contacted for information either.

11/23/2005Let me get this straight ...there is no reason for criminal charges but the Prosecutor continues to cloud the subject with is own comments, the APD and the Prosecutors office have turned it over to ACS, so let them do their investigation and zip the lip. With no charges being filed would that not say that Mr. Alder is innocent ... not in Madison County.I am a choral parent and will tell you that Mr. Cummings did not say that his daughter was in the program and he himself had a run in with Mr. Alder in the hallway last year at a night rehersal. There were several parents there and he was shouting in the hallway that he and other parents were waiting outside the school and were tired of waiting on their children.Mr. Alder stated that the show choirs were a family activity and he would be welcome to come and help out and as soon as the equipment was placed back in the choir room the kids would be able to leave.
    ...
I believe that this is a last ditch effort by Mr Cummings and his gang to get Mr. Alder fired.

"We support Mr. Alder, a great teacher" read another."Alder the best" and "Alder helps singers" were two of several other messages displayed.

The roughly 45 students and parents at Tuesday's Anderson Community Schools' board meeting had a simple message: They want Alan Alder, AHS choir director, back on the job -immediately.

"While I understand the policy removing Mr. Alder from school, I am frightened that after almost six weeks, we still have no answers," said Anderson resident Angela Shively, a member of the AHS Choral Booster Club, who addressed the board for the group of students and parents there.
    ...
Alder was placed on administrative leave Aug. 30 while police investigate allegations that he acted inappropriately with two students.
    ...
Alder, who has served in his position for four years, is a committed, dedicated, loyal individual who graduated from AHS, went to college and returned to his alma mater to be its choir director, Shively said.
    ...
Alder wears many hats for our kids.
    ...
Parent Debbie Rosenfield, who has been the choir's accompanist for the last two years, called Alder "a man of impeccable character who is very professional.

"He deserves to be back in the classroom with his students," she said. They're missing his excellent teaching. The kids wants him back, along with all the parents."
    ...
Alder is an amazing teacher.Who Is nothing but professional.I had him last year.He taught me a lot about myself. He adores the choirs. And deserves to come back.

10/13/2005Mr. Alder is a very professional teacher. He would never jeopardize our education or his career. He is a GREAT teacher that should be brought back immediately!I think that whoever made these FALSE accusations should be indicted!I would also like to thank Debbie Andis for stepping in until Mr. Alder until he comes back. She is also a great teacher!

10/13/2005Indy has recently sent a former teacher to jail for one year regarding this same conduct; and, he, too, had much support from students, collegues, friends and family.Regardless how we may feel about their situations - whether this teach should(n't) be brought back into his position, the law clearly states what is and is not acceptable behavior when it comes to minors. This man may be the most honorable man on the planet; however, something may or may not have happened and it will all be judged in the end by the judge, not the public.I knew the other ex teacher personally (and I am not a minor) He was an outstanding individual who will never teach again in his life and is sitting in jail now. This seems to be such a trend these days ... what is going on?!

10/13/2005I think Alder should be brought back.I had him when I was there and he really is a great teacher.I hope he gets to come back!!!
