Alden presides over regional association, Faculty Council, the classroom and more
Donna Alden's exposure to the latest research in her field of study - learning technology - not only is serving her well, it's benefiting her own students and others in the Developmental Studies Division.
Alden, an NMSU Ph.D. candidate, is focusing on how Web-based courses affect different types of students. And, as president of South West Association for Developmental Education - SWADE, she is organizing a regional conference for developmental instructors in five states - New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada and Utah.
"We're looking at ways in which technology can actually serve our students," she said. "It may be proven that for developmental students, technology should be more supplemental than basing classes on pure technology and the Web. There's a great deal of research going on right now, but since the Web is so new, there's not much valid, replicable research that's been done on this. "

Alden also serves as president of the DABCC Faculty Council which underwent a restructuring process last year to better represent faculty members.
"Now we have elected representatives from the divisions, and those representatives bring concerns from each division to our meetings," she said. "We're now a very proactive organization. We're trying to create better communication - formalized open communication - between faculty and administration."
At an upcoming DABCC conference, Alden will make a presentation focusing on the council's new structure.
